Johnny Cucumber had been kept at a school, where the children were supposed to help care for him. Instead, he was neglected, poorly fed, and eventually abandoned in the woods when his condition became serious. A kind young woman found him severely malnourished, covered in infected wounds, and unable to use his back legs.

Years of poor care had left Johnny’s bones dangerously weak. One leg had begun to atrophy, and the damage to his lower body was so severe that veterinarians feared his spine might be broken. The young woman carried him to a veterinary hospital, where Warm Hearts and Cold Noses took him into their care.

When treatment began, Johnny was weak and barely responsive. Slowly, his strength and personality returned. He began exploring, resisting his medicine, and taking more confident steps. A cucumber found in one of his food bags inspired his unforgettable name. Johnny still needs ongoing care, but he is safe, improving, and receiving the care he should have had from the beginning.
